  • Overview

    The Principal Clinical Consultant is responsible for ensuring that the customer’s end users (typically, physicians, nurses, CDI team, coders, and administrators) understand the customer’s Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) program and are successfully engaged in it – ensuring that standards, performance, utilization and operations are optimal. The clinical consultant works with the customer to continually monitor and manage the program to ensure it meets the customer’s goals and objectives, leveraging the customer's Nuance technology solutions as needed to achieve the desired outcomes.
    Clinical consultants are expert advisors to the customer, delivering training, continuing education, compliance reviews, interim staffing and other scopes and statements of work as identified by Nuance's customer’s business needs. The clinical consultant must understand the needs and priorities of different customer personas and must be comfortable engaging with all levels of the customer organization.




    • Works with the customer to define CDI program standards and performance goals
    • Partners with the Application Consultant to achieve implementation synergy, leverage Nuance technology to achieve desired and expected performance outcomes
    • Partners with the customer, monitoring and managing the CDI program, with a focus on clinical and technical components based on proven CDI methodologies
    • Expert in the capabilities, benefits, potential workflows that Nuance technologies provide, and comfortable advising the client on how Nuance software can facilitate their workflows and goals
    • Leads implementation CDI training, inclusive of C-suite engagement

      Leads post-implementation education, inclusive of C-suite engagement
    • Confidently, articulately and knowledgeably engages customer in conversations about add-on products/services and transfers opportunities to CSO team as they arise
    • Proficient in utilizing the analytics tools in the Nuance software suite

    • Perform tasks related to securing and keeping the products, tools, and processes that they are responsible for securing

    Required Experience:

    Robust clinical practice background
    Electronic Health Record experience
    Experience with advanced analytics
    Program management
    Client management
    2+ years of experience as a manager, team leader or project leader (preferred)
    At least 1-year Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) experience and consulting experience (preferred)



    • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (science, health care management, public health, etc.)
    • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies. Master’s degree in nursing, physician assistant or a related field is preferred

    • Two years minimum experience in an acute care area such as ED (ICU is preferred with that experience being within the past 2 years)

    OR HIM

    • 5+ years of progressive and current inpatient coding, auditing and healthcare reimbursement methodologies plus 1-year CDI and consulting experience (management experience preferred)
    • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in HIM or HIM related field with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field (science, public health,



    Travel up to 75% annually to service the needs of our customers.
    A minimum of 4 consecutive nights for up to 6 consecutive weeks is required for implementations
    Travel on Sunday is required in the majority of cases with a departure from the client site on Thurs.
    Business needs dictate to the distribution of travel.
