  • Overview

    The Principal Consultant is responsible for ensuring that the client's end users (typically, physicians, nurses, CDI team, Health Information professionals/coders, and administrators) understand the client's Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) program and how Nuance’s technology solutions will incorporate technology to ensure it meets the client's goals and objectives.  The Principal Consultant provides guidance to the client on how the client can best leverage their Nuance technology solution suite in order to support and meet their CDI program's goals and objectives. 


    The Principal Consultant will engage in consulting with client leadership to provide services, oversee implementation engagements, and software conversions. PC are expert advisor's to the client delivering training, continuing education, compliance reviews.  The principal consultant is tuned into other client needs such as interim staffing and other scopes and statements of work as identified by Nuance's clients' business needs.  




    • Demonstrates full and complete understanding of all the requirements for a comprehensive clinical documentation improvement program and how technology can benefit an organization’s efforts to ensure an accurate clinical picture for each patient.
    • Knowledge of both CDI and coding issues that affect documentation requirements and how technology supports these requirements
    • Provides subject matter expertise and clarity with clinical documentation examples, case studies to demonstrate return on investment, etc.
    • Guides client in understanding how the client's Nuance technology solutions can best support and optimize their CDI program
    • Understands client's goals and objectives – both quantitative and qualitative – and tailors program delivery and outcomes reporting to ensure alignment with goals and objectives
    • Initiates and manages the change process
    • Represents Nuance in a professional manner at all times, upholding the core values of: integrity, innovation, time, results and Nuance corporate values.
    • Follows company policy regarding expenses and utilization of client and company resources in keeping with company mission to serve clients economically.

    • Aptitude to analyze complex problems using structured problem solving skills, generating necessary data from appropriate sources.
    • Provide oversight and support to coordinate client technology implementation and utilization requiring organization of multiple resources, time management skills and strong organization and communication.
    • Ability to work as project Manager during implementation. – for services and technology
    • Ability to ensure security and confidentiality around the performed tasks related to products, tools, and processes
    • All other duties as assigned/necessary.



    • Travels nationally to deliver results to clients as necessary (travel commitments 50-75%).
    • Business needs will dictate the distribution of travel.
    • A minimum of 4 consecutive nights for up to 2 consecutive weeks is required for implementations for the percentage of travel agreed to.


    License & Certifications

    • Registered Nurse licensure in the state in which you are based, or Physician Assistant Certification


    • Registered Health Information Management (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA and active membership with AHIMA




    • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; science, health care management, public health, etc. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies. Master’s degree in nursing, physician assistant or a related field is preferred.


    • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in HIM or HIM related field with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; science, informatics, public health, etc.  Master’s degree in a related field is preferred



    • RN: Five years minimum experience in an acute care area such as ED, ICU is preferred with that experience being within the past 5 years. 2 or more years of experience as a manager, team leader or project leader. At least 1 year Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) experience and consulting experience.


    • HIM: Five years minimum of progressive and current inpatient coding, auditing and healthcare reimbursement methodologies. 1 year CDI and consulting experience. Management experience preferred.
